The Hockey Song (Song Series) - 24”x24”

Hello out there, we're on the air, it's Hockey Night tonight!

If you're a hockey fan, you likely know this classic song by Stompin' Tom. I grew up listening to his music, in a house full of Leafs fans. Hockey was just a part of life, even though it wasn't as open to females when I was younger. I still grew up in a hockey rink, watching my brother play hockey, while I figure skated. It was just the way it was.

Recently, after I had kids and turned 40, I joined a female hockey league and have been learning how to play the game. It makes the Hockey Song take on a new meaning for me. Especially this year as we have seen the PWHL's inaugural season kick off to bring representation of women in hockey to a larger stage. 

Hockey was also a large part of my relationship with BJ in the early years. He got the game winning goal at Junior A Nationals, and since 2002 has had the stick and gloves he wore to score the winning goal in the Hockey Hall of Fame. On a trip to Toronto last September, we went to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and that's when I got the inspiration for this painting. There was a poster on display that showed the colours of the Original Six NHL teams, and graphically showed by year who had won the Stanley Cup. LIttle squares of blue, red, white, and all of the other colours of the league. 

This piece is an ode to the beginning, when hockey entered our daily lives and became part of Canadian culture. And an acknowledgement that hockey is changing and adapting and slowly becoming more representative. A nostalgic reminder of what is has been and what it will continue to evolve into.

*The Song Series is a collection of paintings where the notes from a piece of piano sheet music are transformed into colours, and each slat of wood in the painting becomes a piano key. This is my way of visually representing the song, in a colour palette that matches the song. For this artwork I chose the colours of the Original Six NHL teams: Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadian, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers. Blue, WHite, Red, Maroon, Green and Gold.
